I love to read. Over the years I have accumulated more books than any person needs but a small fraction of what I would like. So why not same some of my favorites with you? Here are a few that I have really enjoyed. I hope you do too if you get the opportunity to read them. Happy reading!
Paradise Lost by John Milton
Paradise Lost is an epic poem that retells the biblical story of the fall of man, focusing on Satan’s rebellion, Adam and Eve’s temptation, and their expulsion from the garden of Eden.
The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis
In the Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the wordly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. I think this book is the most engaging account of temptation—and triumph over it—ever written.
The Divine Comedy: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso by Dante Alighieri
The Divine Comedy is an epic Italian poem that chronicles the author’s allegorical journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. Guided by the Roman poet Virgil through the first two realms and his beloved Beatrice through the third, Dante explores themes of sin, redemption, and divine love.
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan
The Pilgrim’s Progress is rich in imaginative power and vivid and heartfelt language. It recounts the story of Christian, who appears to the author in a dream, and his journey to Heaven through the trials and tribulations of life.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Gray was Oscar Wilde’s only novel. It is a philosophical tale about a young man who wishes his portrait would age and bear the marks of his sins while he remains eternally youthful and beautiful.
ESV Bible: Interleaved Edition by Crossway
This Bible features a full, blank page next to every page of Bible text. It was patterned after the Bible that Jonathan Edwards, the 18th-century preacher and theologian, used to record more than 5,000 notes about God’s Word. If you want to buy the same version I have, that comes from Crew + Co where you can pick your leather and customize the cover.
The Madeline Treasury by Ludwig Bemelmans
“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. The smallest one was Madeline.” Madeline is a young girl who lives in Paris with her eleven closest friends under the care of Miss Clavel. What she lacks in size, Madeline makes up for in courage. This collection contains all six of the Madeline books in one volume.
Murder, She Wrote: The Queen’s Jewels by Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain
I love reading all of the Murder, She Wrote books but this one is my favorite. In it, Jessica Fletcher takes a transatlantic voyage on the legendary Queen Mary 2. Because of all the adventure and intrigue in this book I decided to take the same transatlantic voyage on the same ship just for the fun of it.
The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence
The Practice of the Presence of God is a spiritual classic. Brother Lawrence, a Carmelite monk, worked in a busy monastery kitchen but maintained unbroken peace by doing his daily chores purely out of love for God. Instead of reserving prayer strictly for solitary, quiet spaces, he treated the entire day as a continuous conversation with the Divine.
The Moomin Collection by Tove Jansson
The Moomin series offers whimsical tales of family, nature, and community in the magical Moominvalley. A Finnish series a bit like Winnie-the-Pooh books. All eight books are contained in this set.
